The Medium is the Message

Marshall McLuhan said that “the medium is the message”. The significance of using media is far beyond the specific information of transmission. For example, the impact of the Internet on our daily lives exceed what we can see the specific content on the Internet, and similarly, the role of mobile phones in our daily lives exceed information distribution. Mobile phone has a great impact on people’s lives and has changed people's lifestyles as well. People are no longer limited to receiving information in front of the TV or radio at home, and it is not necessary to seek the information on mass newspaper. Because the phone with a function of receiving information makes it possible to transfer the information anytime, anywhere; People are no longer passively receive information through media. The simple operation of mobile phone makes people steer this kind of medium easily. Thus we become the operator who could able to transmit the information.

Media are an extensions of man

Marshall McLuhan considered that media are an extensions of the human body. Appearance of any kind of new technologies or new media, they are an extension of human organs. Newspaper is an extension of the visual organ. Broadcasting is an extension of the auditory organ. Television is an extension of visual and auditory organs, and the computer internet is an extension of the human tactile, visual and auditory organs. Cell phone is an extension of all primary sense organ of human. It is because the mobile phone combines the functions of all the media, it is a blend of all the human sense organs including eyes, ears, hands, and mouth.

Assignment of Media and Economy

Design

Video Remix,
30 Sec video advertisements

Corporate companies can put up competitions to make video advertisement for their brands. Users will be given set of characters and sceneries which they can choose from. Ad with most number of views and good aesthetics will be chosen by the company for TV and other media.

Dilemma of 3d animation is that many creative people have ideas in their heads but can’t put them to work because they lack basic skills. Even if you are skilled it is well known that drawing characters and then animating them takes a lot of time and effort.

The aim of video remix is to provide users with pre-made characters, props and environments, where they can use their own creativity and storylines to create short movies. Many of the advanced options will only be available to registered paid users.

Actors will have the following changeable properties
Actions
Postures 
Dialogue
Camera Angles, Three basic cameras will be provided. This will be a long shot where once user has decided upon the script movie produced won’t be editable on the software.

Soundtrack of different genre would be provided like fast paced action, slow drama or romance to create a scenario. User can play around with the actors and the environment. It is very much like recording of video games but because users will have their own story lines its going to be their own video.

Some sort of easy to learn scripting language can be used for animation. Final product would be rendered put up for viewing in the video gallery.

Earning can be done from corporate brands where the pay to get their ads made by the users. Top 3 ads will be the property of the brand and the creators would be given royalty for that. We will charge nominal fee from the brands. Though users will be provided with number of characters and props they can also register and buy new characters and props. Same way artists can put up their models for sale. We will charge a nominal fee on every sale.

A forum will be available for discussion various issues regarding ad making.

Understanding media: The extensions of man

Cold Media

Cold media is an extension of the sense organs. They are media with a low-resolution and high-involvement, such as manuscripts, telephone, television, and spoken language. Because of its low resolution, it provides audience a chance to fill the missing information, and mobilize the audience re-creation capabilities. McLuhan believed that the audience should be positive recipients in the process of information transmission. There are some examples of cold media: Cartoon is a cold medium with a low-resolution, because several of the broad-brush pens provided little information. It requires the viewer to fill their own meaning or to complete the image in their mind. Phone calls with very little information provide to the ear, so it is cold medium. In cold media circumstances, the audience is in fact an active and integral part of the audio-visual experience.

I think the cold and hot media defined by McLuhan are ambiguous. It is inaccurate to distinguish the cold and media according to the clarity of pictures. McLuhan probably ignored the characteristics of the diversity of media content. So Mcluhan’s analysis lack of a standard. If the film is a hot medium, television is a cold medium, how to interpret the television film (with film production method, release through the medium of television) this form can not be simply divided using McLuhan’s definition of cold or hot media. In addition, there are many television programs with a clarity picture and sense of three-dimensional, these kinds of characteristics of television have completely ridded away the scope of cold media. Apart from some television programs focus on the audience participation, I think basically television is hot medium. Similarly, film is usually considered as hot medium coz the general feature films, science films can be understood as the high-definition form. However, the audience has been deeply engaged in some art films that belong to the cold medium.

Hot Media

Hot media, Marshall McLuhan mentioned on his book understanding media, is a high-resolution, and low-involvement media, such as radio, film. It provides audiences sufficient and vivid information. However, audiences have been deprived of opportunities for participation, and their information allows to release through the rigorous editing. Thus, the audiences can only passively receive information.

McLuhan cited some examples of hot media: photographs are high-definition. People do not need to fill in some of the content; broadcasting is hot medium, because it clearly and profoundly provides a large number of high-resolution auditory information. Teacher lecture is hot medium. The entire teaching process is clear, full, unidirectional transfer, in order to making students understand the information, and students are lowly involved in the information distribution.
